   The wildlife sanctuary is a facility where animals are brought to live and be protected for the rest of their lives. Unlike animal shelters, sanctuaries do not seek to place animals with individuals or groups, instead of maintaining each animal until its natural death


   Wayanad wildlife sanctuary is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala declared during 1973. These forests had housed Pazhassi Raja when he was a rebel against the Britishers. The sanctuary is bordering to the protected areas of Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka on the north-east and Mudumalai of Tamilnadu on the southeast. Always maintain a pleasant environment from 13ºC to 32ºC which makes, winters (October to February) ideal for visiting Wayanad wildlife sanctuary. Average annual rainfall is2000mm.

The sanctuary is rich in flora and fauna and wildlife can be spotted in the surrounding regions. The major tree species include Tectona grandis, Terminalia sp, Dalbergia latifolia, Anogeissus latifolia, Grewia tiliaefolia, Adina cordifolia Cirmamum zeylanicum, Pterocarpus marsupium, Vateria indica, Lagerstroemia
lanceolata, Artocarpus hirsute, Macranga peltata etc.
There are 45 species of mammals, 203 species of  birds, 45 species of reptiles, 30 species of amphibians and 59 species of fishes are reported from the sanctuary


Elephant, Gaur, Tiger, Panther, Sambar, Spotted deer, Barking deer, Wild boar, Sloth bear, Nilgiri langur, Bonnet macaque, Common langur, Wild dog, common otter, Malabar giant squirrel, etc are the major mammals. With four ranges namely Sulthan Bathery, Muthanga, Kurichiat, and Tholpetty.
Large wild animals such as Indian bisonelephantdeer and tiger are also found there. The visitors are allowed to stay in the outer zone only as the inner zone which is 25 km wide is accessible to wardens and researchers only.

Visiting timings are from 7:00 AM - 10:00 AM, 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM.

Entry Fee for Indians and for kids is 10 &5 and for foreigners Rs.100.
