Lying in the lap of the Banasura hills in the Wayanad district is the picturesque Banasura Sagar dam. Banasura Dam is the largest earthen dam in the country and the second-largest in Asia. The view of the sprawling reservoir from the top of the dam is breathtaking. Adventures like speed boating are readily available, and a trek up to the Banasura Peak is filled with streams, diverse flora, fauna, lush tropical green and majestic waterfalls. An earthen dam, also known as an embankment dam is created by placing mounds of clay, sand, rock or soil. The view of Banasura Lake from the top of the hill is mesmerising. Chembra Peak

Eight kilometres south of Kalpetta, close to the town of Meppadi, lays the most elevated top in Wayanad. Chembra crest borders Nilgiri slopes in Tamil Nadu and Vallarimala in Kozhikode. The top is obvious from all parts of Wayanad. This place is a perfect goal for trekking exercises. Climb up the rough landscapes of the Chembra Peak found 2,100 meters above ocean level on the southern piece of Wayanad. Chembra is the tallest peak in Wayanad and is a perfect zone for trekking.



Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary
Located in the east of Sulthan Bathery, the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is extremely close to the border of Karnataka. Wild forests house the most popular species of animals like the spotted deer, elephant, bison, wild bear, cheetah, tiger and the likes. Elephant rides are provided by the Forest Department to the tourists.



Edakkal Caves
The Edakkal Caves feature a crevice of around 96 feet in length, 30 feet in depth and 22 feet in width. There is a fissure at this site that was created due to the splitting of a rock. This fissure and rock walls feature carvings of animal and human figures of the prehistoric period.


The caves are located around 25 km from Kalpetta and about 3 km from Ambalavayal. The trekking trail to these ancient caves from Edakkal extends around 1 km. These caves can be best visited in the morning and can be easily reached from Sulthan Bathery, which is around 16 km away.



Kuruva Island
Kuruva Dweep or Kuruva Island is a protected river delta, comprising a cluster of islands over the middle of Kabini River in Wayanad. Spread over 950 acres of land, Kuruva Island is densely populated with rich flora and fauna. The geographical peculiarity of this island makes this place evergreen with a serene ambience.
Dwelling deep into this island, you can sight many attractive things like bridges made up of bamboo trees and other rare species of trees. The uninhabited island is home to rare species of birds, orchids, herbal plants etc. Coming so much closer to nature, you might be feeling Kuruva Island as nature's gift to Wayanad.
